(Operant condition)

  • rewarding stimuli= positive feelings
  • punishing stimuli= Negative feelings
    Therefore:
    • enter some relationships cuz person created + feelings in us
    • don't enter some r-ships cuz they give neg feelings in us

(Classical Condition)

  • attracted to people associated with happy times
  • relationship succeeds when pos feelings outweigh negative
  • r/ship fails when neg feelings outweigh neg

1) Griffitt & Guay

  • asked participants to rate experimenter
    rating was highest when participant was praised on performance by experimenter
  • rewarding individual created positive association

    2) Maye & Hamilton

    • asked females to rate photos of males, while either pleasant or unpleasant music was played. Those with the pleasant music rated males as more attractive, supporting CC.
      • theory is contradicted by Hays who investigated student friendships and found that rather than being focused purely on rewards received, individuals also give priority to rewarding the other person.
