One of the ways that Shakespeare explores the theme of love through Romeo is by using Rosaline. He portrays the relationship between the two as superficial, and almost one-sided. Shakespeare does this through Romeo , when he says: "Love is the smoke made in the fume of sighs". This points an inaccurate picture of what love is like, and shows that because Romeo is seeing of a relationship that isn't real, it is unhealthy towards him.

Shakespeare also portrays this relationship as very shallow, and lacking in depth. He does this by making Romeo say: "I do love a women!".
