Situation Ethics
Created by Joseph Fletcher
Based off of the ides, that if it maximises love, then it is the right thing to do. Agape (unconditional love) is the love that Jesus preached, and the love used in Situation Ethics.
Fletcher’s four presuppositions
Pragmatism
- if it maximises love, it works, so it is right.
Relativism
- only love is constant, so if it creates the most love, it is right. Laws are abstract whereas situations are concrete.
Positivism
- is an act of judgement and faith (which has to come first), no need to justify choices.
Personalism
- puts people are the centre of concern, not things, it is immoral to love things not people, real existence lies in personal relationships
Fletcher’s six propositions
Love is always good
- only thing that is intrinsically good…
