Political control and centralisation under Lenin

  • Created a one-party state by banning all other political parties
  • Created a centralised and industrialised authoritarian state, focusing power in the hands of the Politburo and imposing military-style discipline within the Party
  • Created the Ban on Factions,  ending democracy within the Party and banning disagreement
  • The nomenklatura system (a set of key Party and government posts appointed by the Party and given out as a reward for loyalty) created an elite within the Party
