Significance of SALT 1

What can be considered as the most important agreement between the USA and the Soviet Union during the period of detente was the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT 1) signed in May 1972. The treaty was the result of several years of negotiations between the USA and Soviet Union about which weapons should be limited. It added to the slowing down of the arms race by placing limits on the number of ICBMs and SLMBs each side could have. it forced each side to avoid developing new nuclear technology and avoid spending money on arms.
