Filtration and Evaporation

1. Grinding - Grind the rock salt into small grains with a pestle and mortar.

2. Dissolving - Get a beaker and plastic rod. Pour the rock salt into the beaker with water and stir. The sand grains cannot dissolve, however, the salt grains dissolve into the water.

3. Filtering - Get a clean beaker, filter paper and a funnel. Put the filter paper in the funnel and put the funnel in the beaker. Pour the water and rock salt into the filter paper and leave it to filter through. The big sand grains are too big so they collect in the filter paper, but the salt dissolved into the water filters through.

4. Evaporating - Get an evaporating dish, tripod, gauze and bunsen burner. Pour the salt water into the evaporating dish, and place it on top of the gauze and tripod. Place the bunsen burner under the tripod…
