SELF FULFILLING PROPHECY (SFP) - a prediction which comes true simply by virtue of having it made (living up to a label)
PROCESS OF A SFP:
1. LABEL IS MADE
- e.g. teacher labels pupil
2. INDIVIDUAL GETS TREATED DIFFERENTLY BY PEOPLE ACTING AS IF THE PREDICTION WAS ALREADY TRUE
- teacher treats pupil accordingly to the label
3. PREDICTION IS FULFILLED
- pupil becomes the type of student the teacher expects then to be
ROSENTHAL & JACOBSON used a field experiment to investgate the SFP in a Californian Primary School. ROSENTHAL & JACOBSON told the school they had a new test specially designed to identify the pupild that would 'spurt' ahead. They tested all the pupil but only chose a random sample of 20% & told the school the test (which was fake) identified them as the 'SPURTERS'.
