- Within a population their are a wide variety of alleles that make up the gene pool
- Some individuals have alleles that are advantageous to their environment
- These individuals outcompete those with less advantageous alleles
- They are therefore more likely to reproduce and pass on these alleles to the next generation
- The next generation also have advantageous alleles so they in turn reproduce successfully passing on these alleles
