Sociologists have to decide how they will collect data for their research. The decisions they will make will depend on a range of factors including:
- What they wish to find out
- The topic or issue being studied.
- What information is already available.
- Their preference for quantative or qualitative data.
- How much tine and money the have.
Some of these factors might be connected, for example, a study of crime rtes will require quantative data and the government collects this already, so a starting point will be a secondary source. A study of the effects of crime on victims is more likely to require qualitative data, this maybe available from earlier studies but it is likely that a researcher would collect their own primary data.
