Margin: destructive plate margin; Indian plate was subducted under the Eurasian plate.

Date: 8th October 2005.

Measurement: 7.6 on the Moment Magnitude Scale.

Area damaged: 30,000 km^2 of the area.

Aftershocks: 1,000 in following weeks.

Social impacts:

  • 80,000 people died.

  • Hundreds of thousands were injured.

  • 3 million were left homeless.

  • Water pipes and electricity lines were broken.

  • Landslides buried buildings and people, blocked roads and destroyed telephone lines.
