in 1962, Wilson found that 45% of americans attended church on Sundays, but this was more an expression of the 'american way of life' than of religous beliefs. For Wilson, America is a secular society, because religion there has become superficial. Bruce 2002 shares Wilsons view. He uses three sources of evidence to support his claim that America is becoming increasingly secular;

Declining church attendance;

Opinion polls asking people about church attendance suggests it has been stable at about 40% of the population since 1940. However, this figure mat well be an exaggeration.
