Philosophical libertarianism by jean-paul Satre

No God

Starts his theory by arguing God does not exist. Humankind is free because there is no omnipotent controlling deity.

Satre stated that humanity is condemmed to freedom as people have no choice but to be free. "man is not free not to be free"

Self-conscious

Humans are 'Pour-soi' 'being for itself' have a possession of a self-consciousness as they are aware of their own existence whereas animals 'en-soi' 'being in itself' as they have the awareness of themself.

Self consciousness enables them to think about and consider the different possible outcomes from their various actions. Therefore reflecting on their own life. Satre believed that this opens up a distance between a person's self concsciousness and the physical world. Satre calls it the 'gap', The gap allows people to have free will.

"Once we know and we are aware, we are responsible for our action or inaction."

Bad Faith

Freedom can cause emotional pain for the individual therefore people deny their own freedom Satre called this 'bad faith.' Bad faith is the attempt
