- occurs in subtropical semi arid areas that lie between the equator and hot deserts.
- they recieve periods of heavy rainfall.
caused by the location of hadley cells
at the equator air is heated casuing it to rise, expand cool and condense forming convectional storms
- air is heated and drawn up at the surface and diverges at higher altitudes creating low pressure. the area of convectional storms and converging winds is called the inter tropical convergence zone (ITCZ)
