‘Se7en’ scene analysis 

TECHNICAL CODES: 

This scene uses the rule of thirds, which are guides to frame important clues/easter eggs/information in the same margin. Low-key and high-key lighting is used also, low-key lighting indicates the darkness of the scene and what’s happened, whereas the high-key lighting in this scene is not a very enlightening daylight, this indicates the misery. The mise-en-scene is where the characters are placed on screen. The deceased girl in in the middle along with the clues of her death. The retired detective is stood to the left of the screen, watching the working detectives, he looks tired like he’s seen a dead body before but not a murder scene so surprising. The working detectives are concentrating but missing major clues as they are too busy examining the girl’s dead body. The frame is everything we, as the audience, need to see, located in the frame. The camera angle is a POV and the point of view isn’t of anything, the camera angle is a wide angle full, this makes the audience feel uncertain.  

SOCIAL/BEHAVIOURAL CODES: 

The deceased girl is lying in a religious position, relating to the crucifixion pose. Her nose is cut off, reflecting the figure of speech, ‘Cut off your nose to spite your face’, used to describe a needlessly self-destructive over-reaction to a problem, the killer thinks she was the opposite, vain, and indicating the way she makes the people around her feel about themselves. She has a teddy bear under her arm, which implies her innocence, but to contrast this, she has phone in one hand and pills in the other suggesting she wasn’t who people thought she was. The retired detective is wearing
