Thomas Szasz: medicalization of madness.

  • He believed that as a society we diagnose people with schizophrenia and try to treat them because they do not conform to our social and cultural norms. It is a way of excluding them from our society

Scheff stated that if an individual breaks one or more residuals rules then they are assigned a label - mentally ill - this then influences the person to behave in a way which fits this label. Also it effects how others treat that person. Scheff believed
