Russia had 4 reasons to go to war:
1. To pursue an expansionist policy, gaining land to make up for a relative decline in Europe
2. To obtain an ice-free port, all of Russias ports became unusable in winter months
3. To induce patriotism, to distract from Russias economic and social problems
4. It saw Japan as inferior, an easy victory
