Experiment 1

  • one of the pseudo-patients was diagnosed with bi-polar and the rest were diagnosed with schizophrenia
  • they were hospitalized ranging from 7 to 52 days with an average of 19 days
  • despite showing sanity in public places, the nurses still never suspected that they were pseudo-patients although, the real patients did suspect that they were not real patients because they accused them of being journalists checking up on the hospitals
  • they found that 88% of the nurses and 71% of the doctors ignored the pseudo-patients whenever they asked questions, they didn't even make eye contact
  • a total of 2100 tablets were given to the pseudo-patients during the experiment

  • a total of 193 patients were admitted over a three month period
