Romeo and Juliet Plot Summary

The play begins with a brawl between the Capulets and Montagues in the market square, foreshadowing the ongoing conflict between the families and establishing the theme of violence
Romeo and Juliet meet at the Capulet masked Ball when they talk and kiss whilst not knowing each other's identities - suggesting the feud is shallow and foreshadowing the secrecy of their love throughout the play
Tybalt spots Romeo at the party and is furious, beginning the anger that leads to his and Mercutio's deaths later on
The Nurse finds out who Romeo is and tells him who Juliet is. They are both shocked
After the party, Romeo climbs the balcony to meet Juliet again where they proclaim their love and plan to marry. This huge risk shows the deep passion of their love although presents Romeo as rash and impulsive
Romeo and Juliet get secretly married at Friar Lawrence's cell with only him and the Nurse knowing
Romeo returns after the wedding to find Tybalt challenging him to a duel. He doesn't want to fight but Mercutio does and is killed by Tybalt.
