Context of the play:

During the Elizabethan era, people ranging classes would watch this play. Shakespeare had troubles as the lowest class (who were rowdy and uncivilized )keeping them calm and attentive. To make them happy he included fighting throughout the play not only to make it a tradegy, but to keep them interested. 

Furthermore women were seen as the lower sex so they had less responsibilities and men were dominant. 

Marriage was seen as a business arrangement as the woman would have to bring a dowry to the wedding and would do whatever the man would have to say. E.g. Friar says "Women may fall when there's no strength in men"

Act 1 Prologue:

"From ancient grudge to new mutiny, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean."

-Sets the scene for the audience. 

-Can be used when describing the war between the families.

Ancient- Adjective associated with age, visiting the theme of age here telling the reader this has happened throughout generations. 

New- Adjective asssociated with fresh and pure telling the reader people are born into this conflict, visiting the theme of conflict. (AO3- Commoners would be interested as they have been introducted to violent imagery in the beginning of the play)

Civil- Adjective asssociated with community and groups telling the reader a group of civillians are suffering because of the war.  (AO3- Commoners would be interested as they have been introducted to violent imagery in the beginning of the play)

Blood- Noun associated with gore and violence telling the reader that a lot of violence takes place in Verona. This visits the theme of conflict.  (AO3- Commoners would be interested as they have been introducted to violent imagery in the beginning of the play)
