Why were Romans so interested in decent Public Health? Using Factors


  • they had HUGE cities with densley packed populations- increased the danger of epidemics
  • Public health projects helped politicians win votes

Attitudes and Beliefs/ Science:

  • They knew that good hygiene= good health (did not understand why though)


  • In order to keep empire under control, soldiers had to be kept healthy


  • renowned for their engineering abilities
  • used skills from building other things e.g. forts to make aqueducts and sewers

Examples of Public Health Schemes

  • Free hospitals for former soldiers
  • Aqueducts- transport fresh water from springs to towns and cities
