- Established their own political press, The British Gazette to try and discredit the unions
- on 5 of may middle and upper class volunteers went into action, 300,000 to 500,000 middle and upper class volunteers, London Underground operated by 2,000 cambridge volunteers
- Also government got civil constabulary, in plymouth 2 battleships deployed 20,000 volunteers
- Also very tough on strikers, clashes in Glasgow and Plymouth, overall 1,760 strikers arrested
