ROBERT KOCH
- Developed an interest in Louis Pasteurs germ theory (published 1861).
- Investigated anthrax, a disease affecting animals and humans.
- In 1875, he managed to discover the specific bacterium that causes anthrax
- It was the first time a specific germ that caused a specific disease had been identified and it was further proof of Pasteurs theory.
- Identified bacteria that caused septicaemia, tuberculosis and cholera.
- Developed a method of proving which bacterium were causing disease through experiments with mice.
- Developed a solid medium as an easier way to study bacteria rather than using liquid mediums
- He even grew bacteria on potatoes.
- Developed new ways of staining bacteria with a purple colouring (seen more easily)
