1965 - L.A
In the 1920's The Great Migration occured - Lots of poeple moved to California to escape Jim Crow Laws. The population of L.A in 1940 was 63,000 ---> this increased to 736,700 by 1970
William. H. Parker L.A.P.D chief 1950-66 was renound for using violence
Marquette Frye was arrested and beaten in 1965 spurring a violent reaction from family and friends.
Parker called in the army national guard
In 5 days up to 50,000 people rioted
The media publicicised it as a communist attack of people ruining their own communities
