Reversible reactions

Equilibrium

At equilibrium, the concentrations of reactants and products do not change. But the forward and reverse reactions have not stopped - they are still going on, and at the same rate as each other.

You can predict what happens to the amount of product in an equilibrium mixture if the temp is changed:

  • if the temp is increased the position of equilibrium moves in the direction of the endothermic reaction
  • if the temp is decreased the position of equilibrium moves in the direction of the exothermic reaction.
