Why is the ground shaking?

In earthquakes, the pressure builds up until it is suddenly released along fault which sends out a huge pulse of energy.

An earthquake begins at the focus and then the epicentre is the point on the surface right above the focus which the Earthquake shakes first.

Magnitude

The power of an earthquake (how much the ground shakes) is its magnitude and is measured using a seismometer using the Richter scale.
