Required Practical 1 Simple Distillation

Analysis and purification of water samples from different sources

Apparatus

  • Bunsen burner
  • Condenser
  • Beaker
  • Water samples
  • pH probe/indicator
  • Bung
  • Themometer

Method

  • Place the indicator into the water sample and place in the conical flask using the diagram to set up.
  • As the water travels through the condenser, the cold water around it cools it to liquid state.
  • This will collect in the beaker leaving behind the soluable mass.

Risks

Wear eye protection

Variables

Independant - The water samples tested

Dependant - N/A

Required Practical 2 Titration

Detremination of the reacting volume of a strong acid and strong alkali

Apparatus

  • Conical Flask
  • Burette
  • Pipette and pipette filler
  • Methyl Orange
  • Soduim Hydroxide solution
  • Sulfuric acid solution
  • White tile
  • Clamp stand

Method

  • Wash ans rinse the pipette with the alkali used and fill it up using the pipette filler to 25cm3.
  • Use pipette to fill 25cm3 of sodium hydorxide into a conical flask with the indicator. Place on a white tile under the burette on a clamp stand.
  • Fill the burette using a funnel with acid to 0cm3 mark.
  • Slowly allow the acid to dribble opening the tap, swirling continuously.
  • Look for a permenant colour change from yellow to red. When this starts slow the acid down.
  • Calculate the chnage in volume of acid and repeate three times making a mean.
  • You can calculate the concentration of the acid from these results.
