Reproduction in plants

There are two types of reporduction - sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction.

Advantages of sexual reproduction:

  • The species can adapt to new environments
  • introduces variation into a population
  • A disease is less likely to affect all the individals in a population.

Disadvantages of sexual reproduction:

  • Not possible for an isolated individual
  • Time and energy are needed to find a mate

Advantages of asexual reproduction:

  • Population can increase rapidly
  • Can exploit a suitable habitat quickly

Disadvantages of asexual reproduction:

  • Does not lead to variation in a population
  • Disease may affect all the individuals in a population
  • The species may only be suited to one habitat

Two parents are needed in sexual reproduction, and the offspring produced are genetically different…
