What are the main benefits of renewable energy?
They don't produce greenhouse gases and they are infinite
What are the main drawbacks of renewable energy?
Some are expensive to build and maintain, some are not visually pleasing, may cause people/animals to have to move somewhere else
What are the positives and negatives of tar sand (oil extraction)?
Positives - The environmental issues can be changed/repaired, workers earn a good wage, it can easily fit into our existing energy infrastructure
Negatives - in-situ production methods are not economic eg) steam injection, solvent injection, fire floods and some of them require a large amount of both water and energy, global warming, greenhouse gas emission, impacts air & water quality, impacts wildlife
What are the positives and negatives of fracking (natural gas)
Positives - countries don't have to depend on others eg) the USA because they can do fracking instead of buying and transporting it, creates job opportunities
Negatives - a lot of energy . is needed to obtain the fuel; the energy input to energy output ratio is a very low net gain, its a very water-intensive process which may bring it into conflict with other water users such as agriculture, the fuel is high in carbon dioxide so it emits a lot of greenhouse gases it equals to coal…
