The re-militarisation of the Rhineland
- In march 1936 Hitler moved his troops into the Rhineland
- This was his first big risk
- If he was forced to withdraw, then he would have faced humiliation
- Hitler knew the risks, but had chosen his time well.
- France had just signed a treaty with the USSR to protect each other
- Germany used this to claim Germany was under threat and they needed to protect themselves
- Hitler knew that Britain felt it was fair to let him position his troops in the Rhineland
