The re-militarisation of the Rhineland 

  • In march 1936 Hitler moved his troops into the Rhineland
  • This was his first big risk
  • If he was forced to withdraw, then he would have faced humiliation
  • Hitler knew the risks, but had chosen his time well.
  • France had just signed a treaty with the USSR to protect each other
  • Germany used this to claim Germany was under threat and they needed to protect themselves
  • Hitler knew that Britain felt it was fair to let him position his troops in the Rhineland
  • Chamberlain famously said…
