What shaped the religious settlement?
- she had to act fast to avoid confusion
- she also had to consider the views of Parliament and be aware of teh precarious situation in England`s foriegn dealings with Spain, France and Scotland
Elizabeth`s Religious Views:
- she was aware of her position of influence, especially at the start of the reign, so she tried to remain impartial . not to show too much support for one point of view
- priorities regarding the church shaped politics rather than any religious views
- wanted to healdivisions between Catholicism and Protestantism as well as maximise her control over the church - not create something to reflect her own personal theology
- she believed there could be not unity between different faiths and their mutual hostility would destroy national unity and lead to unrest / civil war
- beleived she favoured Protestantism - Anne Boleyn`s daughter meaning her family was sympathetic to religious reform
- within a month of being Queen she fobade priests in the Royal Chapel to elevate the host and was reported to be furious when the Dean of St Paul`s Cathedral presented her a copy of the Prayer Book containing images of saints
