- coversion to catholicism:
- never a doubt that england would return to papal jurisdiction.
- catholicism in england was well recieved.
main obstacles:
- protestantism- had a strong support from people in the south and in london, shown in the Wyatt rebellion.
- legal obstacles- mary counld not simply change from protestantism without parliamentarian support.
- practical obstacles- benefited from the scale of monastic land and had no desire to surrender, mary was still reliant on thier support.
oppostion:
- 80 mps voted against the repeal of edwardian religious laws.
- over 800 individuals go into exile
- almost 300 protestants die during the reign of mary.
first chnages:
- 7 protestants bishops are deprived of their livings.
- foreign protestants are ordered to leave the country.
- in parliament, any who had married under edward were deprived of their livings until they left their wives. this posed a problem for the church ho were already short of the clergy.
changes to the law:
- first parliament in october 1553, repealed the religious laws from edwards reign.
- it did not chnage…
