Reliability and Validity in Diagnosis and Classification of Schizophrenia

Reliability: different clincians using the same system (DSM/ICD) arrive at the same diagnosis for the same individual

Validity: assessing what it claims to be assessing (high reliability need to be valid

Kleitman (1961): suggest reasons why diagnosis are unreliable, bc there are:

  • differences between clinicains
  • differences between patients
  • differences between procedures used to assess patient

Coprland(1971): 132 US & UK psychiatrists given description of a patient.

  • 69% of US psychiatrists diagnosed patient as SN, 2% UK = questions reliability
