The 1980s - North (poor) vs South (rich) divide (not including London) The south was flourishing under Margeret Thatchers far-right Tory government however, the north was heavily neglected and left In dire poverty. There were huge socio-economic differences.

Conservatives usually do well in rich and white-dominated areas rural, suburban and socially conservative areas.

Labour usually do well in industrial urban areas in south wales, the north, inner cities and metropolitan London they used to have a stronghold in left-wing Scotland, however, the SNP now dominates. Brexit has heavily impacted on politics with Labour losing strongholds in the North of England to the tories due to their stance on the Brexit debate it is unknown whether this will continue in the next UK general election.
