Aluminium is more reactive than iron

Aluminium is oxidised, iron is reduced

Aluminium + iron oxide ----> Aluminium oxide + iron

2Al + Fe2O3 ----> Al2O3 + 2Fe

Al ---> Al3+ + 3e- aluminium has lost electron so is oxidised

Fe3+ + 3e- ---> Fe   Fe3+ has gained electrons so has been reduced

It is called a redox reaction because one part has been oxidised and one part has been reduced.

Oil Rig is another word for oxidation and reduction
