Reasons for the increase in the divorce rate

Two main reasons for the increase in the divorce rate:

• changes in the law which have made divorce easier and cheaper 
• changes in society which have made divorce a more practical and socially acceptable way of ending a broken marriage 

Changes in law

• over the last 100 years divorce has been made easier and cheaper to get and have given men and women equal rights in divorce 
• partly accounting for the steep rise over the last 50 yrs particularly in the 70's and 80's
