- MARGINALITY- WEBER= sects tend to arise in groups that are marginal to society.Such groups who are marginalised e.g. the poor, oppressed etc, go to sects as they offer a solution to their problems e.g. the poor are often offered a way to help increase their economic status. This is also called the theodicy of dispriveleged. This is when a religious explanation is given to help them realise why this is happening. This can be explained as a test of faith or that it will improve in the future.
