When elements are burned in oxygen the reaction is called a combustion reaction. When the element reacts with oxygen the product formed is an oxide. Metals react with oxygen to form metal oxides:
metal + oxygen ---> metal oxide
When non-metals react with oxygen they form more complex oxides.
Equations:
- magnesium + oxygen ---------> magnesium
- 2Mg (s) + O (g) -------> 2MgO (s)
- sulphur + oxygen ----------> sulphur dioxide
- S (s) + O (g) -----------> SO (g)
- carbon + oxygen --------------> carbon dioxide
- C (s) + O (g) ---------> CO (g)
