Qualitative Data Analysis

Thematic analysis:
> Picking out themes and patteren in data
>Boyatiz - thematic anlysis is a way of encoding data
> Themes are the patterns that can help describe the overall data, often in relation to a specific research question.
>Themes/Patterns are identified from coding, they then become categories and data can be examined.

How To  Do It
>Familiarise yourself with the data (read and re-read)
>Generate codes
>Reviewing the themes (any other themes emerging)
>Defining and naming themes (become catagories)
>Producing the report

Issues
>How long a pattern/theme should be - a pattern would tend to suggest there are multiple instances of that point. However themeatic analysis is not about binging in 'quantity'.
>A pattern that did not appear aften but was judged as being a theme would be accepted by researcher. Judge in terms of research question
>Can have driven by theory - look for themes that are captured by the research question
>Can be driven by data - want to capture all data (themes appeare often)

Evaluation
>Flexible way of analysing in that it can be driven by theory or data.
>Way of maintaining rich data and summerise a large amount of qualitative data in a manageable way.
>Allows insights that are not anticipated by the researcher and presents correct and detailed data.
>Participants do not have to be trained to understand the data
