The Assessment

• The Assessment was a monthly (and later weekly) assessment of what a county or area could pay in taxes for the Civil War
• It was based upon the value of land
• Ironically, it used the same formula as Charles had done for Ship Money in the Personal Rule
• It was much more lucrative (and oppressive) than the Ship Money taxation had been; in East Anglia, a single monthly assessment…
