Jodo Shu

  • Honen was the founder of Jodo Shu; he was a Tendai monk but came to prefer the simplified practice of Pure Land and the Nembutsu
  • Karma has a place in Jodo Shu and therefore morality is important
  • If an evil person recites the Nembutsu, his entry to the Pure Land will be delayed by his heavy karma - 'If an evil man can enter the Pure Land, how much more a good man' (Honen)
  • Honen encouraged keeping the Five Precepts

Jodo Shin Shu (True Pure Land)

  • Shinran founded Jodo Shin Shu
  • Jodo Shin Shu temples are run by married priests who pass their duties on to their children
