A child of its time

Perrin and Spencer (1980) suggested that Asch's high conformity rates migt be due to the fact that the research was conducted in the USA in the 1950's - the era of McCarthyism and a highly conformist society. Perrin and Spencer repeated Asch's study in England in the late 1970's. They found that only one student conformed in 396 trials.
