The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a central role in states of bodily arousal associated with stress.

The ANS centres are located in the brainstem.

From the brainstem, the ANS pathways run down through the spinal cord and are distributed throughout the body by spinal nerves.

The ANS is classified as a componant of the peripheral nervous system (PNS).
