Ana-Maria Rizzuto has argued that religion is no more of an illusion than science, as both disciplines require interpretation of data and impose order on the world. Freud's assumption that science has the sole claim to truth is therefore unnacceptable. Rizzuto argued that Freud has replaced religion with an illusion.

Lowenthal distinguished between projective religion, which is immature, and intrinsic religion, which is serious and reflective. Freud neglected the diversity and development of religious beliefs.

Guirdham argued that Freud overplayed the connection between belief in God and the 'psychopathological' tendencies of much organised religion, and between the feeling of security in the womb and religious belief.
