Psychodynamic Approach

Principles:

• Mental disorder from psychological, not physical: Freud origins come from unconscious unresolved conflicts in childhood. 
• Unresolved conflicts cause: conflicts between id (demands immediate satisfaction ruled by pleasure principle),ego (consequence,experience of reality, conscious and rational ruled by reality principle) and superego (conscience, right and wrong sense). Ego protects and mediates with ego defences (repression, projection,denial,regression,displacement) helping deal with anxiety. Used too much=disturbed behaviour. 
• Early experiences: childhood ego not developed enough to deal with traumas. Unconscious motivations: Ego defences excert pressure through unconsiously motivated behaviour. Memories hard,impossible to bring awareness too, gives powerful effect. Distressed as dont know why…
