After WW2, the world went into a peridod called 'the cold war'- this was a struggle of ideas with communism on one side and capatalism on the other. Americans saw communism as a threat by Russia which would take over the American way of life. Triggering a period called 'McCarthyism' where people with communist beliefs were put on trial for being un-patriotic. Americans began to comply to social situations. Complying with the behaviour of a larger group is called conformity, which is a type of social influence.
