Undoubtedly the character who enacts the most revenge out of all the characters in the novel but questionably this is all a knock on effect of actions from Hindley.

As a child we see this in his wish to, “Paint the household with Hindley's blood". This revenge develops into his main motivation for surviving when he says,” I'm trying to settle how I shall pay Hindley back. I don't care how long I wait, if I can only do it at last. I hope he will not die before I do!’. When he rescues Hareton from falling Nelly notes that, “It expressed, plainer than words could do, the intensest anguish at having made himself the instrument of thwarting his own revenge.”. His plan when returning after 3 years was to, “ have one glimpse of your face, a stare of surprise, perhaps, and pretended pleasure; afterwards settle my score with Hindley. “ then to kill himself.
