Ontic evils (non-moral or pre-moral evils)
As a general rule, proportionalists follow the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. However, occassionally, the situation will demand performing ontic evils (an action usually considered immoral which has the purpose of achieving a greater, proportionate good)

  • For example, a surgical operation may be the right thing to do, but it is causing pain to the patient - in this case, an intrinsically bad action (causing pain) becomes acceptable because it is in the context of life-saving surgery
