Proportional Systems

  • Seen as inherently more democratic
  • Yield an equal number of representatives per number of votes cast
  • 40% of votes = 40% of seats
  • Smaller parties such as the Lib Dems who hold less safe seats are in favour of proportional systems

Single Transferable Vote

  • The electorate vote for single candidates rather than a whole party
  • Country is still divided into constituencies but parties put forward as many candidates as there are possible seats to be won
  • Voting is done via preference system but you
