Alcohols - Properties and Uses

Uses Include:

  • Alcoholic drinks - eg. beers, wine
  • Solvents (that can dissolve chemicals) - useful for perumes/aftershaves + ink
  • Fuels as they burn in air
    • ethanol is used in biofuel
    • used in fermentation
    • ethene + steam
    • When they burn completley they produce: ethanol + oxygen - CO2 + water
  • Methanol, ethanol and propanol produce neutral solutions when mixed with water
