Viruses

Have no kingdom as they are not truly alive.

  1. Extremely small and can only be seen with an electron microscope. 1/1,000,000mm can be seen under a magnification of 30,000 50times smaller than bacteria.

  2. Electron microscope was invented in 1931 by Ernst Ruska and Max Knoll, before that we had no idea how viruses looked but knew they caused disease.

  3. They have regular, geometric shapes.

  4. Not alive. Their only living characteristic is replication, and even this only in a host cell.

  5. They are made of a central core of genetic information, either DNA or RNA surrounded by a protein coat known as capsid, made up of subunits of capsomeres.

  6. e.g. flu, HIV

Bacteria

Larger than viruses and can be seen with a light microscope.

Range from 0.5-5 micrometres.

Living and carry out 7 life processes.

They compose:

  1. A cell wall of protein, sugar and fats.

  2. A cell membrane made of fats and protein.

  3. Cell contains cytoplasm (jelly like substance where chemical reactions take place.

  4. No nucleus, but have genetic information as a large strand of

  5.  coiled DNA called chromosome. There are also smaller DNA
