unicellular
Viruses
Have no kingdom as they are not truly alive.
-
Extremely small and can only be seen with an electron microscope. 1/1,000,000mm can be seen under a magnification of 30,000 50times smaller than bacteria.
-
Electron microscope was invented in 1931 by Ernst Ruska and Max Knoll, before that we had no idea how viruses looked but knew they caused disease.
-
They have regular, geometric shapes.
-
Not alive. Their only living characteristic is replication, and even this only in a host cell.
-
They are made of a central core of genetic information, either DNA or RNA surrounded by a protein coat known as capsid, made up of subunits of capsomeres.
-
e.g. flu, HIV
Bacteria
Larger than viruses and can be seen with a light microscope.
Range from 0.5-5 micrometres.
Living and carry out 7 life processes.
They compose:
-
A cell wall of protein, sugar and fats.
-
A cell membrane made of fats and protein.
-
Cell contains cytoplasm (jelly like substance where chemical reactions take place.
-
No nucleus, but have genetic information as a large strand of
-
coiled DNA called chromosome. There are also smaller DNA…
